Lifers is a personal field journal for the birds you photograph, operated by Urple, LLC. Your sightings stay on your device.
What we collect
Nothing on our servers. Lifers has no backend, no accounts, and no analytics. Every sighting you log — photo, species, location, date, camera details — is stored locally in your device's app storage.
How your data is used
Photos are stored in the app's local files. They are never uploaded.
Location is used in three ways, all initiated by you:
- Locally, to sort autocomplete suggestions by proximity to where you are.
- Sent to OpenStreetMap (Photon) to look up place names when you search for a location.
- Sent to iNaturalist to fetch a list of bird species commonly seen near you, which helps rank suggestions.
Camera roll metadata is read when you import a photo to retrieve the original capture date. Your photo library is not browsed or copied.
Third-party services
The app makes requests to these services only when you take a relevant action:
- eBird — fetches the global bird taxonomy. No personal data is sent.
- iNaturalist — receives your approximate coordinates to return nearby species. iNaturalist's privacy policy applies to that request.
- Photon (Komoot) — receives your search query and approximate coordinates to return place suggestions. Photon's privacy policy applies.
No advertising. No tracking SDKs. No analytics.
